Preface
The 28th annual scientific meeting of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Kristallwachstum und Kristallzüchtung, DGKK, (German Association of Crystal Growth) took place from March 4th to 6th 1998 at the University of Karlsruhe(TH). From March 2nd to 5th the 6th annual scientific meeting of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Kristallographie, DGK, was held at the University of Karlsruhe too. The DGK meeting gathered about 450 and the DGKK meeting about 150 participants. The one day overlap was planned as a common event and contained one plenary lecture on advanced crystal growth studies with proteins as key substances, the conference dinner and a session with four invited lectures on the topics: "Preparation and Characterisation of Layered Structures and Interfaces". This was an effective stimulant for exchange of science, knowledge, and experience between the members of both associations. Additionally some ties of friendship could be strengthened some new ones founded.
The further scientific program was followed by invited lectures and oral contributions on atomic layer epitaxy, molecular beam epitaxy and physical vapour deposition of organic molecules as well as the use of thin layer solar cells and the mass production of uniform III-V crystalline layers. The first session of the following day brought information on nitrogen-influenced defects in silicon and modelling of resistivity distribution in zone refined silicon. With information on the influence of rotating magnetic fields on convection and static magnetic fields on diffusion this session was closed. The next session contained lectures on optical crystals on oxidic and fluoridic bases and on imaging with x-ray synchrotron radiation and x-ray topography. Last but not least we got a survey on quasicrystals, hydrodynamics of thermodynamic driven flows in melted zones and the twinning during gas phase crystal growth of II-VI materials. In total we had seven invited lectures and ten oral contributions. Additionally there were time of about 4 hours to discuss the scientific work presented in 42 posters which were exhibited during the whole meeting and gave a comprehensive survey on the work which is done in the field of crystal growth and characterisation mainly by members of the DGKK but from outsider scientists too.
The local organisation was done for the DGKK meeting by members of the Kristall- und Materiallabor and for the DGK by members of the Institut für Kristallographie. We were proud on the good response we got from the participants concerning both the scientific level and the hospitality. This is the place to thank all our guests for their active participation which is the reason for a successful meeting.
This is the second time that the lectures and posters of a DGKK annual meeting partly are presented in a special issue of CRT. I want to express my serious thank to the principal editors to give the DGKK that opportunity and I hope that this will stay a good possibility in future to present the excellent scientific work of the contributions on the annual meetings of the DGKK on a broader platform. I believe this will give benefit to both: the publishing journal and the authors.
