Role of the Type of Impurity in Radiation Influence on Oxide Compounds

Susceptibility to radiation of rare-earth elements and transition metals in Y3Al5O12, YAlO3, LiNbO3, SrGdGa3O7 single crystals was investigated. Additional absorption bands after g-irradiation with doses 103-107 Gy and protons with fluencies of 1013-1016 cm-2 were found. A decrease in additional absorption with increasing Pr3+, Dy3+ and Cu2+ and with decreasing Nd3+ and Fe3+ dopant concentration was observed. Dopants like Ce3+ and Cr3+ show a relatively complex behavior. This behavior strongly depend on the type of radiation and its dose.

Keywords: gamma and proton irradiations, additional absorption, thermal annealing, oxidizing atmosphere, reducing atmosphere
