HRTEM Observations of Σ =3 and Σ =9 Tilt about <011> Axis Grain Boundaries in Bulk CdTe Crystals

High resolution transmission electron microscopy image of Σ =3 and Σ =9 tilt about <011> axis (first and second order twin) boundaries was observed in a specimen cleaved from a melt grown CdTe bulk crystal. Part of the first order twin boundaries lie in and planes. The dislocation cores were found in the boundary plane of a Σ =3 tilt boundary lying in planes. The images of the observed boundaries were simulated using the software package "MSLICE" based on the multislice method. It is concluded, according to these findings, that part of the twins are due to thermal stress.

Keywords: CdTe, grain boundaries, HRTEM, image simulations, deformational twinning
