Preparation and Mesomorphic Properties of a Homologous Series of N,N'-(2-Bromoterephthalylidene)-bis(4-alkylaniline)s and Crystal Structure of the Butyl Homologue

The title series of liquid crystalline compounds (BTBAAs) shows nematic behaviour with broad mesophases. Their melting points are almost the same as those of the corresponding chlorine substituted derivatives (CTBAAs), but their clearing temperatures are lower than those of CTBAAs. Crystal and molecular structure of N,N'-(2-bromoterephthalylidene)bis(4-n-butylaniline) (BTBBA) have been determined and proved to be quite similar to that of N,N'-(2-bromoterephthalylidene)bis(4-n-butylaniline) (CTBBA).

Keywords: preparation, mesomorphic properties, crystal structure
