X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopic Studies on Coloration of SrLaAlO4 Single Crystals

An investigation of the X-ray photoelectron spectra of single crystals of SrLaAlO4 grown at various oxygen pressures is reported. Light yellow crystals were obtained at pressure of oxygen lower than about 5x10-4 atm while green colored crystals at oxygen pressure higher than 5x10-3 atm. The obtained X-ray photoelectron spectra of Sr, La and Al ions show no significant difference while clearly seen difference in the O 1s spectra for light yellow and green crystals was found. The O 1s spectra of green crystals can be split into three superposed spectra assigned to absorbed oxygen, an oxygen in the unit cell and an interstital oxygen. As for light yellow crystal only two the O 1s peaks defined as adsorbed oxygen and an oxygen of the unit cell were found.
