An introduction to polarisation phenomena observed at X-ray diffraction is given. Using an arrangement being analogous to optics of visible light, the polarisation state of the diffracted beam has been investigated using quarter wave plates. Depolarisation phenomena at the excitation of a non-coplanar many-beam geometry are shown for lithium fluoride samples. The results are explained in terms of incoherent diffraction, as known from light optics.
