Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Neumann was born in 1944. He obtained the “Diplom“ degree in mineralogy from the Humboldt-University of Berlin in 1968.

From 1970-1991 he was research fellow in the Institute of Solid State Physics and Electron Microscopy of the Academy of Sciences in Halle/Saale.

After the reunification of Germany this institute was transformed into the Max-Planck-Institute of Microstructure Physics where he was a member of the scientific staff from 1992-1995. He was awarded his PhD in 1983 and his “Habilitation” degree in applied physics in 1993 from the Martin-Luther-University in Halle.

In 1996 he became full Professor of Crystallography at the Humboldt-University of Berlin. In addition to his university position, he is currently the Director of the International Centre of Advanced Materials and Electron Microscopy and the Chairman of the National Committee of the German Society of Crystallography.

Prof. Dr. Klaus-Werner Benz was born in 1938 in Berlin. He studied Physics at the University of Stuttgart and obtained a Diploma degree in 1963 and a PhD in 1970.

From 1971-1986 he was Head of the Semiconductor Crystal Laboratory of the University of Stuttgart and became 1986 Professor of Physics at the University of Paderborn.

From 1988-2003 he was Director of the Crystallographic Institute, Albert-Ludwigs-University, Freiburg and from 1993-1994 Dean of the Faculty of Earth Sciences.

Since 1990 he is also a Director of the Freiburg Materials Research Center of this University. From 1999-2003 Prof. Benz was Prorektor (Vice-President) for Science Transfer and Communication Technologies of the University of Freiburg. Since 1996 Prof. Benz is Vice-President of the International Organisation of Crystal Growth.
